Important Bulletin - D300 Product Registration

This bulletin is to make you aware of a short-term problem we are experiencing with the Nikon online product registration system. When registering a new D300 purchase, some customers may receive an on-screen message informing them that their serial number is "grey market". While some customers may experience this for the normal reasons, some customers may receive this message without warrant.

We are aware of the problem and are taking steps to correct it

As a Measure, please note the following:

  • At this time, US D300 serial numbers begin with a 3.

  • The cellophane envelope containing the D300's instruction publication should have an "AU" sticker on it. This does not mean Australia. It is another confirmation of a Nikon Inc. (US) product.

  • Thanks you for your patience and understanding.

Tanaka Study Group at the Japanese Cultural Center in Honolulu

Dave Hutt, our Professional Sales team supervisor, was in Hawaii last week servicing our dental market and doing some instructional work with the photo department at BYU-Hawaii. He was last in Hawaii in January attending the Hawaii Dental Association convention and trade show, where we hosted a booth displaying our latest dental digital photography kits.

Last week he presented a demo program at the Tanaka Study Group at the Japanese Cultural Center in Honolulu. This was the second time Pro Photo has been invited to present a program for this prestigious group of cosmetic dentists and other dental professionals. His talk and demo this time was on the importance of monitor calibration and how this enables accurate communication of graphic files between the dentist and his/her dental lab. He ended with a hands-on demo of the Gretag-Macbeth EyeOne Match2 calibrator, and sold several of those units there at a professional discount. He also did follow-up consults, and is assisting Dr. Jon Yoshimura as he upgrades the photographic facilities in his clinic in Honolulu.

He then went to the town of Laie, on Oahu's north shore, where the campus of BYU-Hawaii is located. Earlier in the year, the photography department, under the direction of Dwight Miller, made a major purchase of the LEAF Aptus 65 digital backs, the Mamiya 645AFD II cameras, and several lenses. At the time of negotiating the sale, Dave mentioned he'd be in Hawaii in March and would come and offer whatever assistance they would need to fully utilize this very sopisticated system.

He was able to show them some of the finer points of the LEAF software, and how to open those files in Photoshop. Going forward, Dave will continue working with them as they expand their photo department and helping them take advantage of the Mamiya educational discounts.Since both products, the Gretag-Macbeth calibrator and the LEAF/Mamiya equipment, are supplied through the Mamiya Corporation, Fred Watanabe, our Mamiya rep, accompanied Dave at the Tanaka group meeting and at BYU. With his deep product and business knowledge, he was able to provide valuable information and assistance to both organizations.

Next up for Dave and Meredith: The Professional Photographers of Washington's Convention and Tradeshow March 31 - April 1 up at Ocean Shores.

    Africa’s Undiscovered Myths Ejournal

Scientists and DNA evidence tell us that some 150,000 years ago people walked out of Ethiopia’s Omo region to inhabit the world. That makes the Omo the birthplace of Modern Man.

This is a return trip for me to the Omo. I first went there in 2001, to study with six of the least-touched tribes in this remotest corner of Africa. As I interviewed the elders, shamans, chiefs and storytellers about their myths and archetypal personal dreams, I wondered if the seeds of their oral stories predated written history.

Amazingly, anthropologists tell me that I am the only person to ever record those oral stories. These are the stories that answer the big questions of life such as where the first person came from, is there life after death and is there a God? From the detailed interviews, I created photo illustrations to visualize the tribal myths and dreams. You can visit my web site to get a more complete picture about Africa’s Undiscovered Myths Project and my previous four Africa trips at www.jmiglavs

On this return trip, I want to share the work I have done with the people of the Omo tribes and hear more stories. I want to talk again with the Konso elder whose advice to world leaders was: “We are all the same. We all have five fingers,” he said as he held up his hand. “Even if we have different religions.” I want to hear shaman Haska Galede tell me more about the personal god that each Karo and Hamar has.

My previous Africa trips have been solo. I wanted a total immersion into the life, culture and spiritual wisdom of these least-touched tribes. While that was very effective, there were lots of questions that didn’t get asked because I didn’t think of them until someone asked when I got home.

This time, besides traveling with my son, Ryan, I want to interactively involve the entire world to share in these travel adventures and spiritual experiences. We are doing all of this via solar-powered satellite internet connection. This is an open invitation for you to share your thoughts, perspectives and questions as my son Ryan and I travel to the Omo, searching for the roots of Modern Man, searching for what we humans have learned since the first tribes people left the Omo 150,000 years ago.
